A Music School With a Vision

Scherzo Music School was founded in the year 2000 to serve the San Francisco Bay Area as a quality music educator. Located in San Mateo, Scherzo Music School continues to serve our community on the core beliefs that music can be taught and learned at any age, and any level, a proper music education should be accessible to all children, and that it is never too late to start learning.

At Scherzo, we believe a quality education is well-rounded, and goal oriented. Therefore, all lessons include music theory, proper technique, and artistry. To get the most out of lessons, we believe that every student should always have a goal they are working towards. Therefore, we provide performance and standardized testing opportunities as well as internal and external competition opportunities. When students have a clear objective, they are better able to see their progress, are better equipped to achieving their goals, and more motivated to continue to grow.

The Scherzo Difference

Scherzo provides structured lessons that are tailored accordingly to each student’s unique needs. One way we accomplish this by employing a variety of teaching methods with each student. A second way we accomplish this is by our highly qualified teachers. At Scherzo, we take pride in the selection of each instructor. All instructors come with a strong music background from a variety of professional music schools. As accomplished musicians, all of our teachers are committed to their art, their mission as educators, and as performers.

As we strive to promote a life-long love and appreciation of music to those we meet, we envision a future where we play an integral role in bringing music into your home to share with your friends and family. As we look ahead, we will be working to open additional locations, add new programs, expand our outreach, increase our online lessons and programs, grow our rental program, build on our current lessons program, grow our online store offerings, and simply make it as easy as possible for you to have music be a part of your life.

Scherzo Music School was founded in the year 2000. Since its inception, it has uninterruptedly served the San Mateo area and adjacent cities within the San Francisco Peninsula and the whole Bay Area. Scherzo Music School is a year round music education facility offering weekly lessons once or twice per week in several instruments, as well as online lessons to students of all ages and levels of musical experience. Various one-on-one and online teaching methods are used to meet the unique needs of each student and family. The school currently offers piano, violin, voice, flute, recorder, harp, cello, viola, oboe, saxophone, clarinet, and theory lessons for students who look for a solid foundation in music in a fun and challenging environment. In addition to the individual lessons, Scherzo Music School offers its Music/Piano Discovery for children between 3 and 5.5 years old and starting October 2020 the “Musica Maravillosa” program in Spanish for children between 3 and 5.5 years old. The school takes pride in the selection of each instructor. All our instructors at the school come with a strong music background from different professional music schools. As accomplished musicians, all the teachers are committed to their art and mission as educators as well as performers. In addition to weekly lessons, Scherzo Music School offers online/long distance lessons. Scherzo School believes that it is important for students to have a goal for their music instruction, therefore, the school offers performance opportunities, preparation for standardized music exams like the ABRSM, CAPMT or the CM , preparation for auditions. The school also opens its installations to musicians and music teachers in San Mateo and the peninsula area who need to rent a space for rehearsal, their own music practice or to teach private lessons. Scherzo Music School is an equal employer and active member of the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) and thrives on the diversity of its staff. Aurelio Torres started his music learning at the age of five with the recorder. He soon learned the melodic and mandolin on his own and started private piano lessons shortly after. At the age of 17, he was accepted in the National School of Music of the UNAM in Mexico City, where he took organ and piano, in addition to musicianship, harmony, choral practices, analysis, history and other subjects. During that time he participated in chamber ensembles and played actively in events throughout the University and around the country.

Mr. Torres started teaching music at the age of 19 at the Yamaha Music School in Mexico City, where he received music pedagogy training and his certification as musicianship and piano instructor, as well as examiner for the Yamaha Music Curriculum. During his work at the Yamaha Music School, he participated in national and international music contest in Mexico, Uruguay and Japan, both as a student and as a teacher and travel extensively throughout Mexico proctoring the Yamaha Grade Level Exam. While living in Mexico, Mr. Torres performed at different venues as a soloist and as an accompanist. Mr. Torres worked as the accompanist of the Japanese Choir “Cosmos” for couple of years before moving to Los Angeles, California.

In California, he continued his studies at the City College of San Francisco where he obtained 2 computer science certificates in UNIX systems and Network Administration, and music at the University of California, Berkeley, from where he received his degree.

Mr. Torres taught at several music schools in the Peninsula and Berkeley. In 2000 He started his own private studio in San Mateo. Mr. Torres’ studio was the base for Scherzo Music School in 2010. Currently Mr. Torres serve as the school director of the school while he continues to share his love and passion for music.
